Jose Mourinho had to settle for a point in his first Primera Division game in charge of Real Madrid after drawing a blank at Real Mallorca.
The visitors were largely uninspiring yet still created enough chances to have won comfortably with Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo uncharacteristically wasteful in front of goal.
And with Mallorca goalkeeper Dudu Aouate turning in a wonderful display, there was no way through for Madrid’s star-studded team.
Barcelona’s sparkling 3-0 win at Racing Santander earlier in the day set a marker for Madrid but they were unable to get anywhere near the Catalan giants’ level of performance.

Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and David Villa struck as La Liga champions Barcelona picked up where they finished off last season with a 3-0 win at Racing Santander.
Messi, who grabbed a hat-trick in the Spanish Super Cup last weekend, only needed four minutes to rip open the defence and score with a delightful lob.
Iniesta followed up with a volley from outside the area and new signing Villa headed his first league goal in a Barca shirt, after Victor Valdes had saved a penalty before the break.
Pep Guardiola’s side appeared unruffled by the contentious exit of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to AC Milan and laid down the marker for Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid, who open their campaign at Real Mallorca in the late game.

BARCA BOYS ... Bojan, Pedro and Lionel Messi celebrate winning the league
BARCELONA strolled to a 4-0 victory over Real Valladolid to retain their La Liga crown.
After a rocky start from Barca, nerves were settled when Luis Prieto turned the ball into his own net on 27 minutes.
Pedro then doubled the Barca lead four minutes later and a brace from Lionel Messi in the second half capped the win.
Messi’s double saw the brilliant Argentinian match Ronaldo’s record of scoring 47 goals in all competitions, 34 of them coming in the league.
Real Madrid, who began the day only one point behind Barcelona, fell behind against Malaga as Sergio Duda scored in the ninth minute.
Rafael van der Vaart equalised early in the second half but Real could not find a winner.
