Aston Villa 3-0 West Ham Utd
The Villa Park faithful were treated to a marvellous display by their side and gifted a number of opportunities by some very bad defending. James Milner capped off a fine display with a top class finish on what could be his final match for the club. Marc Albrighton was also in inspired form.

Manchester United eased past Premier League and FA Cup holders Chelsea thanks to goals from Luis Antonio Valencia and debutant Javier Hernandez. Salomon Kalou pulled one back for Chelsea late on before Dimitar Berbatov scored a third after Hilario found himself way off his line for no apparent reason.

Manchester United were in town to open Dublin’s new Aviva Stadium and they certainly put on a show by hitting seven goals past the Airtricity League XI.
But it was more an evening of celebration than any credible guide as to how Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad are gelling, because the opposition was not taxing.
The United defence was rarely stretched, while attacking players such as Park Ji-sung, who scored twice, Antonio Valencia and Michael Owen enjoyed plenty of space.
Mexico’s Javier Hernandez has made a good start to his United career, impressing on the tour of America and producing a sharp display here. Fergie must be considering him for when the serious stuff starts.

Back with a bang: Michael Owen enjoys his first pre-season goal
Michael Owen was making his first appearance since suffering a hamstring injury in the Carling Cup final in March which required surgery, but he looked sharp before making way for Dimitar Berbatov at half-time and took his goal well.
Ferguson has indicated that Owen will not be fit enough to face his old club Newcastle in United’s first Premier League fixture of the season but, on this evidence, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker is not far away.
Park Ji-sung also looked fresh despite his exertions at the World Cup with South Korea this summer. It was his perseverence and sense of anticipation that led to United’s first goal and one of several penetrating runs set up the second.

Settling in nicely: United new boy Javier Hernandez (left) got on the scoresheet
Chris Smalling played with Nemanja Vidic in central defence for the first time. The £10m signing from Fulham was rarely troubled.
Javier ‘Chicharito ‘ Hernandez took just 93 seconds to get on the scoresheet after replacing Wayne Rooney at half-time – evidence that the £7m Mexico striker is a natural predator.

Rooney.. smoking
Lighting up a cigarette, urinating against a wall and singing raucously in the street at dawn, Wayne Rooney looked every bit the boorish England fan instead of the most gifted player in the country.
Indeed, photographs of the 24-year-old striker enjoying a night out in Manchester city centre with his wife, Coleen, and a group of friends at the weekend could not have been more at odds with the image of a professional sportsman.

But this was not Rooney making the most of an extended holiday after the World Cup – a tournament in which he fell woefully short of expectations and railed against his own fans.

Liverpool takeover bidder Kenny Huang promises transfer spree and new stadium if he can oust Americans
Chinese businessman Kenny Huang has pledged to invest heavily in Liverpool should his ownership bid succeed.
The head of Hong Kong-based investment company QSL Sports Ltd has been in talks with Royal Bank of Scotland for some time over buying out the Reds’ £237million debt.

Promises: Huang has big ideas for Liverpool
That would give him ‘a ridiculously large amount of leverage’, a source said, in order to be able to force out unpopular owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.
But the spending would not stop there as Huang, whose interest is described as ‘remarkably serious’, is keen to get a deal done in order to be able to furnish manager Roy Hodgson with money to spend in this month’s transfer window.
In addition, he will also turn his attention to finally getting Liverpool’s new 60,000-seater stadium built in Stanley Park after three years of inertia.
‘He wants to get it done quickly so investment can come this summer,’ said a source close to the bid.
‘Liverpool need investment in the playing squad and infrastructure and Huang wants to build the stadium.
‘The club has an outstanding reputation but does not have the infrastructure to keep with it and make it grow.’
Huang is backed by one of the wealthiest investment funds in the Far East and is well known in China for his interests in baseball and basketball, last year buying a 15 per cent stake in American NBA side Cleveland Cavaliers.
He was first linked with a buy-out at Liverpool two years ago but believes now is the time to make his move.
Huang is making all the right noises to get supporters on board but, although the majority will be delighted to see the back of Hicks and Gillett, the fans will be wary of grandiose promises.
