Furious Sir Alex Ferguson has scrapped plans to make Wayne Rooney Manchester United’s next captain after the striker bedded a £1,200-a-night hooker.

The manager is “bitterly disappointed” by Rooney’s behaviour and feels he has let his club down.

Sir Alex, 68, told pub drinkers he had been thinking about giving the star the honour of leading United but has changed his mind.

A source said: “Sir Alex was saying he had high hopes for Rooney and would’ve made him captain but those plans have gone out of the window.

“He didn’t think Rooney is mature enough yet and the accusations only proved his point. Sir Alex clearly cared about Wayne but he can’t ignore what’s happened.” (Daily Mirror)

It would be surprising if revelations in Wayne Rooney’s private life affected his position at Old Trafford, that really isn’t Sir Alex Ferguson’s style. Whilst the Man United boss may well have been angered by the news that has been plastered all over the place since the News of the World allegations arose, it would be very unlike the Scot to make such a decision based solely on matters that have no baring on the striker’s performances or ability to lead the side.

I have no doubt that Ferguson will have spoken to the 24 year old or will do so in the near future but he is not the type of man to make knee jerk reactions such as this. This is more than likely a nothing story created by one of the publications that exposed the original sordid affair in the first place.

As long as Rooney performs to the best of his ability on the field of play then that will surely all that will be taken into consideration when he looks for alternative leaders.
